Arsenal have reportedly launched a surprise summer swoop for Japan international forward Takuma Asano, according to Sanyo News (via the Metro).

The Premier League side, who finished second in the English top-flight standings after pipping North London rivals Tottenham to the runners-up spot on the final day of term, are understood to have made a formal offer for the highly-rated Sanfrecce Hiroshima striker ahead of the forthcoming 2016/17 season.

The 21-year-old, who has four international caps for his country, scored seven goals and provided three assists in 19 appearances in all competitions last season.

Asano, who made his international debut against North Korea back in August 2015, has emerged as a shock transfer target for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger – who could be on the lookout for the next rising star in Asia.

The Sanfrecce Hiroshima ace is being pursued by Arsenal after England and Leicester City star Jamie Vardy turned down the chance to join the Londoners earlier this month.
