Aston Villa fans will be hoping for much better from their side when they embark upon their 2017/18 Championship campaign in August.

There was renewed optimism around Villa Park prior to last season when Roberto Di Matteo was appointed as boss, yet their first campaign in the second tier didn’t go to plan, with the former Chelsea manager sacked in October, and Steve Bruce brought in to lead them to an underwhelming 13th place finish.

Yet with a full pre-season and summer transfer window to come, expectations are high ahead of the coming season, with the Villa Park faithful hoping that their side can sustain a promotion push next term.

However, it’s clear that reinforcements will be needed if they are to challenge for a Premier League return, and Bruce appears to be acknowledging that with a reported move for Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan.

The 33-year-old has been at the bet365 Stadium since 2008, but with Darren Fletcher arriving from West Brom, he’s unlikely to play as regularly under Mark Hughes next time round.

And Bruce is looking to take advantage, with the Midlands club reportedly confident of a deal despite seeing a £500,000 bid rejected by the Potters.

And news of a potential deal for Whelan stimulated quite the response from Villa fans on Twitter, who seem split about a move for the Republic of Ireland international…
