Aston Villa’s hopes of signing Christopher Samba could be derailed by Birmingham City.

According to a report in the Birmingham Mail the defender who has been training with Villa could be reunited with his old QPR boss Harry Redknapp at St Andrews.

Samba is available as a free agent after quitting Panathinaikos in mid-season and being unable to get fixed up in England.

The 33-year-old made his name at Blackburn Rovers before a colourful period that includes stints with Anzhi either side of working with Redknapp at QPR before further spells with Dinamo Moscow and Panathinaikos.

Samba is keen to settle back in England and spent the last two months of the season training with Villa but wouldn’t hesitate to sign up at Blues.

Steve Bruce has a number of key decisions to make and knows that allowing Samba to star at City wouldn’t look good as Villa attempt to get off to a flying start and push for promotion.
