Bournemouth are reportedly eyeing a surprise £5 million Deadline Day move for Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe, according to Mirror Football.

The Cherries had been linked with a move for their former loanee at the start of the transfer window, but after signing Benik Afobe and Lewis Grabban for a combined fee of around £18 million, it was understood that they had cooled their interest.

However, it appears as though Eddie Howe is still keen to be reunited with the 33-year-old, who scored five goals last month for the Black Cats.

It is unclear whether Sunderland would be willing to sell to a direct rival, but the South Coast outfit aren’t giving up hope just yet.
