Charlton Athletic are now just one point from safety after an emphatic 4-1 victory at relegation rivals Rotherham.

Danish striker Simon Makienok opened the scoring with a simple finish after meeting Zakarya Bergdich’s cross following his mazy run down the left wing, only for Chris Burke to equalise moments later. The Addicks then took the once more when Igor Vetokele rounded off a great counter-attack for Jose Riga’s side, just before half-time.

Denmark international Simon Makienok netted his fourth and fifth league goals of the season against Rotherham on Saturday.

Makienok grabbed his second goal of the game with a header from a corner, before Ademola Lookman added a late fourth after coming off the bench.

Cardiff City closed the gap on the play-off places to just two points with a 3-2 win at Huddersfield Town as they took advantage of the FA Cup fixtures this weekend.

Peter Whittingham put the visitors ahead late in the first-half with a fine finish, but Nahki Wells was on hand to level for the Terriers before the break.

Lex Immers then restored Russell Slade’s team’s lead with his first strike for the club since his loan move from Dutch outfit Feyernoord. Whittingham added a third with a stunning free-kick.

Harry Bunn pulled one back for the hosts in stoppage-time but they were unable to salvage a draw.

Meanwhile Birmingham City climbed into the play-off places despite drawing 0-0 away at Bristol City, who remain in the relegation zone on goal difference.
