Championship Round-up: Derby win at Hull as Brighton return to the summit

Derby County went top of the Championship with a 2-0 win at Hull City on Friday night thanks to a brace from Jacob Butterfield.

Butterfield latched onto a loose ball to put the Rams in the lead inside 20 minutes, before following that up with a superb volley from the edge of the box to seal Paul Clement’s side’s 10th win in 13 league games, as the Tigers lost for the first time at home this season.

However, Brighton were quick to spoil the party on Saturday after they won 2-1 at home to fellow promotion hopefuls Birmingham to reclaim top spot.

Solly March had put the hosts 1-0 up with a thumping effort in the first half, before Jon Toral equalised for the Blues, who had previously lost just once in eight away matches. However, Bobby Zamora netted his fourth goal of the campaign, after some impressive work by March, to extend Brighton’s unbeaten run to 18 matches.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough climbed up to second with a comfortable 2-0 win at struggling Huddersfield, who have now lost all three games since the sacking of Chris Powell.

Adam Clayton opened the scoring against his old club, with Emilio Nsue’s sublime effort after cutting in from the wing ensuring David Wagner and his side were on the losing side again.

Ipswich extended their unbeaten run to six games with a 3-0 away victory at Charlton. Daryl Murphy’s brace, along with Freddie Sears’ effort, gave Mick McCarthy’s side the three points which moves them level on points with Birmingham, who occupy the final play-off spot.

Rotherham won for the second game in a row, beating fellow strugglers Bristol City 3-0 to move to within a point of escaping the relegation zone.

Jonson Clarke-Harris put the hosts in the lead with a curling strike within the first 10 minutes, before following that up by tucking away a penalty. Lee Frecklington rounded off the scoring with a close range finish, with 15 minutes left to play.

Burnley scored two goals in the final five minutes to draw at Cardiff to extend their unbeaten run to nine games.

Aron Gunnarsson and Sean Morrison gave the hosts a 2-0 lead, but a late strike from Rouwen Hennings and an own goal from Matt Connolly means the Clarets remain in fifth place.

QPR interim manager Neil Warnock won his first game since returning to the Hoops’ dugout with a 1-0 win over his former club, Leeds United. Charlie Austin came off the bench to seal the victory with his eighth goal of the season.

Blackburn were held to a 2-2 home draw with Sheffield Wednesday, despite taking the lead twice in Paul Lambert’s first game in charge at Ewood Park.

Hope Akpan nodded the hosts in the lead, from a Craig Conway corner but Modou Sougou then levelled with a close-range finish. Corry Evans restored Blackburn’s lead just before half-time with a powerful shot, but Lucas Joao was on hand to make it two goals apiece with six minutes left to play when he headed home Kieran Lee’s late cross.

Nottingham Forest returned to winning ways with a comfortable 3-1 home win over Reading.

Matej Vydra’s side-footed strike had put the Royals in front, but the hosts were quick to respond, when Chris O’Grady tucked the ball in the net. A Nelson Oliveira brace secured the win and it was the first time the Reds had scored more than two in a league game this season.

Managerless Fulham hit back to draw 1-1 with Preston, thanks to Ross McCormack’s superb free-kick, as he netted his fifth strike in six matches. Joe Garner had earlier given the visitors the lead as North End sit three points clear of the drop.

Wolves failed to score for third time in six games, as MK Dons eanred a goalless draw at Molineux to see them move out the drop zone.
