Huddersfield Town remain on top of the Championship table, despite losing 1-0 away at Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday night.

Defeat for the Terriers, their first in the league this season, cuts their lead at the summit to just one point. After a home loss at the weekend, Anthony Knockaert’s second-half strike was enough to give the Seagulls victory and lift Chris Hughton’s men up to seventh in the standings.

Newcastle United moved to within a point of the leaders after a comprehensive 6-0 victory away at Queens Park Rangers. Jonjo Shelvey opened the scoring for the Magpies, before Ayoze Perez doubled their lead before the interval.

Shelvey’s second, just after the break, opened the floodgates. Ciaran Clark, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Grant Hanley all found the net to give Rafa Benitez’s side a second successive away win as they push for an instant return to the Premier League. Defeat drops Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s West London boys down to 14th.

Newly promoted Barnsley continue to impress after a 4-0 victory away at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Championship Player of the Month, Conor Hourihane, put the Tykes ahead, before three late goals sealed the win. Adam Hammill, Saidy Janko and Tom Bradshaw all netted to lift Paul Heckingbottom’s outfit to within one point of top spot. Walter Zenga’s Wolves drop to 16th.

Norwich City move up a place to fourth after a 2-1 win at home to Wigan Athletic. Two early goals from Jacob Murphy gave the Canaries victory, which leaves them just one point outside the top two. Jordi Gomez’s second-half strike couldn’t inspire a comeback for Gary Caldwell’s side as the Latics drop into the relegation places.

Birmingham City fell to fifth in the Championship table after they were held 0-0 away at Reading. The Blues remain undefeated away from home this season, but missed the chance to close the gap on leaders Huddersfield. A point for the Royals keeps them in tenth place.

Fulham also lost the chance to close in on top spot after they drew 1-1 at home with Burton Albion. Jackson Irvine’s goal early in the second-half looked liked earning all three points for the Brewers, before 16-year-old Ryan Sessegnon’s second goal of the season picked up a point for the Cottagers. Nigel Clough’s side drop one place to 15th.

Ipswich Town climbed up to eighth with a 1-0 victory away at Derby County. Luke Varney scored the game’s only goal to kick start the Tractor Boys’ promotion push. Defeat for the Rams, their second home loss in a row, leaves Nigel Pearson’s outfit struggling in 20th spot.

In the evening’s most eventful game, Sheffield Wednesday moved up to ninth following their 3-2 victory at home to Bristol City. Tammy Abraham’s first-half brace looked to have the Robins cruising towards victory. However, the game was turned on its head during a hectic second period.

Steven Fletcher’s goal brought the hosts back into the game, only for defender Sam Hutchinson to be dismissed for the Owls on the hour mark. Lee Tomlin missed the resulting spot kick, a moment that would prove crucial. Within two minutes, Gary O’Neill then saw red for the visitors.

With both side down to ten-men, it was Carlos Carvalhal’s side who took control. Barry Bannan netted the equaliser, before Kieran Lee added the final twist with a stoppage time winner. Lee Johnson’s West Country boys drop to 12th in the standings.

In the big match at the bottom of the table, Leeds United came out on top with a 2-1 victory over rock-bottom Blackburn Rovers. Chris Wood put the Yorkshire side ahead, only for Marvin Emnes to bring their Lancastrian opponents level. It was Kyle Bartley who settled this war of the roses. His late winner lifted Garry Monk’s side out of the relegation zone and up to 17th. However, Owen Coyle’s Rovers remain at the foot of the table with just two points to their name.

Preston and North End leapt out of the bottom three after Tuesday night’s 3-0 win over Cardiff City. Tom Clarke and Callum Robinson put North End two up by half-time, before Jordan Hugill’s late strike confirmed a vital three points. A second win of the season moves Simon Grayson’s side up to 19th, whilst defeat dropped the Bluebirds to within one place of the drop zone.
