England crashed out of Euro 2016 with a whimper as they were embarrassingly beaten 2-1 by Iceland in their round of 16 tie in Nice on Monday night.

Shoot rates the Three Lions’ players, and manager Roy Hodgson, who resigned following the defeat, out of 10 after their abysmal performance on the French Riviera…

Starting XI:

Joe Hart – 2

While he could do nothing about Iceland’s opening goal, the goalkeeper made a huge error for the second, letting the ball slip away from his grasp and over the line. It was the fourth time he had conceded from just five shots he had faced in this tournament.

Danny Rose – 3

The left-back made little impact going forward, and was part of a England defence that conceded two poor goals to an Iceland team ranked 34th in the world.

Gary Cahill – 3

The centre-back should have done better to close down Sigthorsson for Iceland’s winning goal, and struggled at the back throughout, with the defence also failing to clear from Aron Gunnarsson’s long throw for the opener.

Chris Smalling – 3

Like Cahill, he should have done more to stop Iceland’s winning goal, and was part of one of the most disappointing defensive performances by England in recent years.

Kyle Walker – 3

The Tottenham full-back did well getting forward early on, but he was at fault for Iceland’s equalising goal after he failed to stay with Ragnar Sigurdsson, who volleyed home unmarked from six yards, and his passing was particularly disappointing in the second half.

Eric Dier – 2

The midfielder was caught ball-watching and failed to pick up Gylfi Sigurdsson in the build up to the second Iceland goal, and he was replaced by Jack Wilshere at half-time. A performance to forget.

Dele Alli – 3

The midfielder provided plenty of movement, and one decent effort that went just over, but he switched off defensively for Iceland’s opening goal and skewed an effort high and wide in the second half.

Wayne Rooney – 3

He may have scored his 53rd goal for his country from the spot in the fourth minute, but it was downhill from there for the England captain as nothing came off for him, with a number of poor passes and poor control seeing the Manchester United man replace by his club team-mate Marcus Rashord five minutes from time.

Daniel Sturridge – 4

The forward looked lively early on and played a brilliant ball over the top to Raheem Sterling, who won the penalty in the third minute. He then set up Alli for a good chance in the second half, but was pretty anonymous apart from that as England failed to find any cohesion in attack.

Harry Kane – 2

Another night to forget for the striker, who endured a disastrous Euro 2016 campaign. The Tottenham man continued to take free-kicks against Iceland, and his performance was summed up when he hit a 30-yard free kick about 10 yards wide of the post.

Raheem Sterling – 3

The winger showed his pace and did brilliantly to win the penalty after he was brought down by Halldorsson in the area, but he struggled to get into the match after that moment, and was substituted off for Jamie Vardy on the hour-mark.

Substitutes:

Jack Wilshere – 3

The midfielder replaced Dier at the interval, but struggled to impose himself on the match as England struggled going forward.

Jamie Vardy – 3

The striker came on for Sterling with half an hour to go, but while he caused a few problems for defenders, he couldn’t find the goal that his nation needed.

Marcus Rashford – 5

The youngster replaced Rooney with five minutes left to play, and made more of an impression in attacking areas than many of his England team-mates did in 90 minutes. He ran at the Iceland defence and Hodgson will possibly regret not putting the striker on earlier.

Manager:

Roy Hodgson – 1

The former England boss oversaw a shambolic performance in Nice, with his players showing no improvement in the second half despite finding themselves 2-1 down at the break. After failing to inspire his team with his half-time team talk, he resigned straight after the match.
