Disappointing results over the course of the Premier League campaign mean both Chelsea and Newcastle have endured much-maligned seasons in the top-flight.

These two stuttering sides will be looking to their respective creative midfielders to help them earn three points this Saturday evening at Stamford Bridge.

The last time these two teams met at St James’ Park, Newcastle threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 in a pulsating game.

Under Guus Hiddink, the Blues have looked more like the title winners everyone saw last season. Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United means that Chelsea are unbeaten in their last nine league games as they look to recover a respectable position.

Since the Dutchman’s arrival in West London, Cesc Fabregas has been a player back in form and has been influential in his club’s sequence of games without defeat.

Meanwhile, Steve McClaren spent big in the January transfer window to secure Jonjo Shelvey.

The England international has impressed so far in the North East, following his £12 million move from Swansea, much to the delight of his manager.

The Magpies will need the midfielder to continue his recent good form against the champions this weekend to steer clear of the relegation zone, having leap-frogged Norwich with a 1-0 against West Bromwich Albion last time out.

Both sides will be looking to build on their recent performances, as they look to climb up the Premier League table.

Here’s how the duo compare so far this season…
