League Two Round-Up: Plymouth spurn chance to go top, Stevenage give Sheringham the chop

Plymouth Argyle failed to go top of League Two following a 1-0 home loss to Wycombe Wanderers, who are now one point adrift of the play-offs with two games in hand over Mansfield Town.

Gozie Ugwu scored the game’s only goal in the third minute from close range. The visitors goalkeeping coach Barry Richardson, 46, played his first game in more than a decade as he replaced the injured Alex Lynch.

Sheringham was sacked as manager of Stevenage having lost five of his last seven league games in charge.

York City won their first game in five matches with a 2-1 victory over Stevenage after Danny Galbraith’s stoppage-time winner. Kenny McEvoy put the hosts in the lead, before Keith Keane equalised for Teddy Sheringham’s men with just over ten minutes left to play.

Galbraith then scored the winner in the 93rd minute from the edge of the penalty area to give York their fourth win in the league this season.

That last-gasp blow was enough to see Stevenage sack the former England striker as their manager after Sheringham’s side picked up just three points from their last 24 available.

Yeovil Town won for the second consecutive match with a 3-2 win at Wimbledon as they came from two goals down. The Dons went ahead twice in the first-half through David Fitzpatrick and Tom Elliott. But a hat-trick from Jack Compton earned the Glovers a valuable three points. His first was a simple finish, the second a superb curling free-kick before his penalty sealed his treble and more importantly his side’s victory.

Cambridge United overcame Leyton Orient with a comfortable 3-1 win as Kevin Nolan lost his first game in his managerial career. Ben Williamson gave the visitors the lead when he picked up a poor pass from Frazer Shaw to race through on goal before adding his second. Armand Gnanduillet pulled one back for the O’s, only for Jimmy Spencer to restore the U’s’ three-goal cushion moments later.

Accrington Stanley beat fellow promotion chasers Bristol Rovers in a tight game that saw the hosts win 1-0. Sean McCoville netted the only strike with 20 minutes left to play with a fine 20-yard effort.

Crawley Town lost for the third game in a row as they lost 1-0 to Mansfield who climbed up and into the play-offs. Chris Beardsley headed home his first goal of the season from a well worked corner routine.

Exeter City won their second game in a row with a 2-0 victory at Hartlepool United. Alex Nicholls and Joel Grant grabbed the goals as the Grecians move up to 12th in the standings.

Notts County inflicted Nathan Jones’ first loss as manager of Luton as Alan Sheehan gave his old side the lead with an own goal as he diverted the ball into the net. Veteran striker Jon Stead then doubled the Magpies’ lead with a fine finish.

Newport County are now seven points clear of the relegation zone as they won 2-1 at Morecambe. Scott Boden put the visitors ahead inside the first minute when he met Mark Byrnes’ cross, but Shaun Miller equalised for the hosts. Boden then grabbed his second of the match to earn the Exiles all three points.
