Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have joined Manchester City and Manchester United in the race for Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy, according to RMC Sport in France (via The Daily Mirror).

The 22-year-old was a regular feature in the Ligue 1 side’s ascent to the title this season, laying on five assists in just 25 league games to help Leonardo Jardim’s men to the summit, eight points clear of giants and big-spenders Paris Saint-Germain.

And with seven appearances in their run to the semi-finals of the Champions League, the one-time France international has enjoyed a fine campaign at the Stade Louis II, and as a result is attracting interest from some of England’s biggest sides.

And that’s because recent reports suggest that Klopp’s Liverpool have joined the Manchester duo in pursuit of the young defender as the Reds look to sort out their left-back problem.

Midfielder James Milner played there for most of the season following the disastrous start and poor form of natural full-back Alberto Moreno, and although the former England international has performed solidly, it remains to be seen whether he can keep up that level of consistency on both domestic and European fronts next term.

However, Klopp is going to have to break the bank for Mendy, given that City boss Pep Guardiola is reportedly ready to offer £39 million for the left-back’s services, and the financial power of United may see them offer even more than that over the coming weeks.

Clearly, Mendy is in huge demand ahead in what could be a long and developing transfer saga over the coming weeks and months.
