Middlesbrough have confirmed the signing of former Spain Under-21 international defender Antonio Barragan.

The Premier League newboys, who face Stoke City at the Riverside Stadium during the opening weekend of the forthcoming new 2016/17 campaign on August 13, have landed the right-back from La Liga outfit Valencia on a three-year deal.

The 29-year-old, who featured once for Spain’s U21 side back in 2007, made 35 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish top-flight club last season.

Barragan did in fact kick-off his senior football career in England with Premier League rivals Liverpool, but he managed just one first-team appearance for the Reds back in August 2005 during a Champions League qualification tie.

The Spaniard becomes Boro boss Aitor Karanka’s sixth summer signing following the arrivals of Viktor Fischer (Ajax), Bernardo Espinosa (Sporting Gijon), Marten De Roon (Atalanta), Jordan McGhee (Hearts) and Victor Valdes (Manchester United).
