Man United manager Jose Mourinho has told out-of-favour club captain Wayne Rooney that he may have to leave his beloved club in order to get regular first team football, according to reports from The Sun.

As per the report, the Portuguese decided he did not want to keep the England captain’s camp in the dark over his situation, and admitted he can no longer guarantee him a place in the starting XI.

The former Everton youngster, who made the move to Old Trafford 12 years ago, has come under heavy criticism off the back of the Euros this season and has not started for the last four outings in the league.

Whilst he cannot assure the 31-year-old of regular first team action, the former Chelsea boss is not actively looking to sell the United legend, who reportedly has lucrative offers from the MLS and China on the table.

Rooney has made over 500 appearances for the Red Devils since joining from Merseyside, scoring 246 goals and winning five league titles, a Champions League, one FA Cup and three League Cups.
