Newcastle are considering a big money move for William Carvalho.

According to a report in the Chronicle a deal reaching £39m is under discussion for the Sporting Lisbon midfielder.

Newcastle would be hoping to keep the down payment at around half that figure but with transfer inflation going through the roof Sporting are keen to ensure that they get a slice of any future transfer profit.

West Brom have been monitoring the 25-year-old all season but won’t be competing at that price range.

Key to any Newcastle deal is the players age with the club determined to ensure that there is sell-on value on any players that they sign during the transfer window.

Although Rafa Benitez is making it a priority to sign players ready to step straight into the Premier League Carvalho’s age and position take a lot of risk out of the signing.

The Newcastle boss has been given a substantial budget to work on and is at liberty to spent it in whatever areas he feels necessary.
