Tuesday, 04/10/2011
Niall Quinn has stepped down as chairman to take on a new role at Sunderland.
The former Republic of Ireland striker will now be responsible for building the Mackems as an international brand.
Owner Ellis Short will take over as chairman at the Stadium of Light.
Quinn, a big fans' favourite as a player, is the man credited with raising the club's profile, helping to bring in boss Steve Bruce and finding the cash to buy a host of players.
He has also been the important link between the Wearsiders and their supporters, often attending fans' meetings and answering questions openly and honestly.
