Newcastle defender chase

Wednesday, 14/12/2011

West Ham have reportedly turned down a £2.5m bid from Newcastle for defender James Tomkins.

The Magpies need defensive cover with Steven Taylor set to be out for the rest of the season and boss Alan Pardew has earmarked a player he worked with during his time at Upton Park.

But Hammers gaffer Sam Allardyce doesn't want to sell and wants the former England Under-21 star to agree a new deal.

Tomkins, 22, has more than two years on his contract but would relish an early return to the Premier League.

For Newcastle it would be the purchase of another promising young star, at a good price and a potential long-term player. They are likely to return with an improved offer.

Meanwhile, centre half Mike Williamson returned from injury yesterday to play 45 minutes in a behind closed doors friendly.

Fellow defender Tamas Kadar was also involved and both could be in the squad for the game against Swansea at the weekend. Captain Fabricio Coloccini is expected to return.
