Striker set for Newcastle
Tuesday, 13/12/2011
Modibo Maiga looks set to join Newcastle United on January 1 – with reports that he is today in London undergoing a medical.
The Mali striker is out of favour at Sochaux and has been on the Magpies radar since the summer.
It is believed that the Geordies will have to part with around £6m to land the hitman.
Maiga, who will need a work permit, has expressed his desire to move to St. James' Park and it is understood that hammering out a personal contract will not be a problem.
The 24-year-old has won 27 caps for his country and has scored four goals. Newcastle are likely to agree a long-term deal with a player they hope will have as much impact as their other recent signings from France.
Boss Alan Pardew is also likely to move for long-term target PSV Eindhoven defender Erik Pieters, following the injury to central defender Steve Taylor.
