Sunderland’s McClean gets call

Monday, 20/02/2012

Sunderland midfielder James McClean has been added to the Republic of Ireland squad for the friendly against the Czech Republic.

Initially left out by boss Giovanni Trapattoni, the 22-year-old is now in the 26-man squad for the game at the Aviva.

McClean, a bargain £350,000 buy from Derry City, has stamped his authority on the Sunderland side since Martin O'Neill took over as manager at the Stadium of Light.

He has already played for Northern Ireland Under-21s but has been given international clearance to play for the Republic.

Trapattoni said: "I spoke with him and I said, 'Congratulations, James, I wish you to come with us.' We now have insurance that he can play with us, and this is important."

McClean added: "Absolutely buzzin and honoured to be called up to represent my country... best feeling there is."
