Former Liverpool and Everton defender Gary Ablett died yesterday at the age of 46.

Ablett, born in Liverpool, played for both the red and blue sides of Merseyside.

He lost his long battle with a form of blood cancer on New Year's Day.

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen said: "So sad to hear the news that Gary Ablett has passed away. He played for some great clubs and had a career to be proud of. RIP"

Everton boss David Moyes added: "It is so, so sad about Gary. He was a lovely man, well liked by everyone."

Ablett played for Liverpool from 1985-92 before moving to Everton for four years and then going to Birmingham for three years and later Blackpool. He also turned out for Derby, Hull, Sheffield United and Wycombe on loan.

He was involved in coaching at Everton and Liverpool before taking over as Stockport County boss and more recently had been working as a coach with Ipswich Town.
