Woodgate joins Stoke

Jonathan Woodgate has signed for Stoke City.

The former England defender was a free agent after being released by Tottenham.

Woodgate, 31, who has been tormented by a series of career-threatening injuries, has agreed a pay-as-you-play deal.

The former Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Real Madrid star had been linked with a return to Leeds United, his first club, but has now been thrown a Premier League lifeline.

Potters boss Tony Pulis admitted: "It's a chance we are taking, but one we were keen to take because of the stature and quality of the player."
