Hammers boss wants three

Thursday, 05/01/2012

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce says he wants two new players to boost his side's promotion hopes.

The Hammers chief admits he wants a defender and a striker... and that he also fancies a wide player too.

Allardyce has already been knocked back in attempts to land Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes and Cardiff winger Peter Whittingham.

"In an ideal world, I will bring in two new players this month - a forward and a defender - because we only have five subs and we have to rotate the squad," said Allardyce.

The Upton Park gaffer knows that he also faces a battle to hang on to defender James Tomkins.

The 22-year-old has been the subject of two failed Newcastle bids but the Geordies are unlikely to give up easily and may offer some of their fringe players as sweeteners in any deal.

Tottenham and QPR are also thought to be keeping an eye on the Tomkins situation. The England Under-21 star was given his first chance with the Hammers whilst current Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was in charge at the club.
