Keeper Andy Lonergan hope Leeds United’s caretaker manager Neil Redfearn is given the job on a permanent basis.

Redfearn was put in temporary charge of Leeds after the club sacked Simon Grayson on February 1.

Former Barnsley midfielder Refearn has been a coach at Elland Road since 2008 and Lonergan believes he deserves a crack at the top job.

“Neil Redfearn is a good coach and deserves a chance. Why not?," said Lonergan.

"He has done well with the youth team and the reserves and he knows the club. I think it is worth a shot and I get on well with him.”

Captain Lonergan, who was sad to see Grayson go, added: “From a footballing side of things, we were not far off the play-offs but the club expects a lot more and the chairman expects more."
