Championship
Portsmouth in peril
Wednesday, 28/07/2010
The future of relegated Portsmouth is again back in the melting plot.
A judge will decide on their future next week as Government tax officials try to block the Championship side coming out of administation.
The club claim they owe £24m but HM Revenue and Customs say the figure is £37m. The difference is thought to involved payments made to overseas players for image rights.
Pompey are currently under a transfer embargo restricting them to just 20 players although they currently have just 18 on their books. New boss Steve Cotterill must now await the outcome of the court case next Tuesday (August 3) before he continues his pre-season planning.
Club administrator Andrew Androniku had feared that the court case might not be heard until October at the latest which could have caused even further problems for Pompey who are reportedly £120m in debt.
