Posh rubbish McCann transfer talk

Peterborough fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the speculation linking captain Grant McCann with a move away from London Road appears to have been nipped in the bud.

National newspapers reported earlier this week that the 31-year-old Northern Ireland international was set to complete a £500,000 move to Championship table-toppers Southampton.

It was suggested that Posh owner Darragh MacAnthony may have to sell players in January, and that half a million would be enough to tempt him to part with his captain.

Clearly angered by these claims, MacAnthony took to his personal Twitter account to set the record straight, tweeting: “We have no need to sell at all thank goodness. Hate when newspapers imply **** like that without merit or asking me directly. LAZY JOURNALISM”.

McCann also used Twitter to further downplay the issue. He stated, “Don’t know where they got that rumour but I’m not leaving and I am more than happy at Pboro!”

McCann signed for Posh from Scunthorpe on a free transfer at the beginning of last season.

He played a starring role in our League One promotion glory last term, scoring 13 goals from midfield as well as racking up the most amount of assists in the whole division.

This season he’s been in even better form, currently topping the club’s scoring charts with seven. It’ll be a boost to everyone at the club knowing that, for now at least, he’s happy to stay.

Transfer speculation over for another week, Posh can now concentrate on their big away trip to Birmingham City on Saturday.

While of course huge underdogs, we’ll travel to St. Andrews knowing that we’ve held our own against all of the ‘big name’ opponents we’ve faced this season.

West Ham only beat us with a dubious penalty, and Leeds only edged past us with a last-gasp winner, while we’ve beaten the likes of Cardiff, Derby and Portsmouth.

In other words, there’s no reason for us to fear anyone in this league. If we play to the high standards we’ve so often reached this season, we’ve got a chance against anyone.
