Reading grab Irish star

Republic of Ireland Under-21 striker Karl Sheppard has signed for Reading.

The former Everton player follows in the footstpes of Irish stars Kevin Doyle and Shane Long who made a name for themselves after arriving from Ireland.

Sheppard, 20, who has played in the Europa League this season for Shamrock Rovers, has agreed a two and a half year deal with the Royals.

He said: "Can't wait to get training and playing! Can't thank the people, fans and most importantly the playing staff at ShamrockRovers it's been some year."

Sheppard admitted he had received offers from other Championship clubs but Reading's history with Long and Doyle had swung the decision in their favour.

The Dublin-born player was with Everton between 2007-10 before returning to Ireland. He has scored nine goals in 23 league games this season.
