Wednesday wonders
Friday, 16/10/2009
Thankfully we've got a return to league action after what seems to have been a long international break. Sheffield Wednesday's performance and result a couple of weeks ago against Derby was awful and we could have done with getting straight back into action to try and get back on track rather than having to wait for this Saturday's clash with Coventry.
Equally though, I think it's seemed like a long break because international football has lost a lot of interest for me. I still support England and l love the tournaments when they come round, but the qualifiers, especially meaningless ones like the last couple, just get in the way of the season. I put most of this drop in interest down to the fact that Wednesday just aren't associated with international football anymore. In the not so distant past we had a team full of internationals, now only Jermaine Johnson see's regular international action with Jamaica, not quite the same as having several players in the England reckoning.
We went from having the likes of Chris Woods, Des Walker and Carlton Palmer regularly appearing for England in the early nineties to having to claim Austrian international Cristian Mayrleb, who was only on loan and really wasn't very good, as Wednesday's only link to Euro 2000.
We do have a proven England player at the club at the moment though - step forward Franny Jeffers who has a 100 per cent record for England, one game one goal. With that kind of pedigree he should be a certainty for the World Cup squad!
The only other current player I can think of who can boast a 100 per cent international goal ratio is David Nugent. With those stats a Jeffers-Nugent front two would strike fear into every defender in South Africa next summer. You know it makes sense Fabio.
Despite my interest in international qualifiers flagging, I suppose it's only a few seasons ago we still had to play a game on international breaks when we were in League 1, so a weekend of boredom is preferable to being down there again.
A couple of more wins and we'll be up around the play-offs again ... and dreaming of a time we can start signing international class players again.
