Wednesday, 25/01/2012

Nine men have been arrested today following early morning raids by police investigating an incident after the FA Cup tie between Charlton and Fulham.

The police are looking into suspected racist abuse which involved fans singing on a train on their way back from Craven Cottage.

The men are aged between 20 and 30 and were arrested following Operation Midas. Poliuce said they believe the nine are Charlton fans.

Using help of CCTV footage and with the support of Charlton Athletic, police were able to swoop just two weeks after the fixture.

Charlton chief executive Stephen Kavanagh said: "We will be seeking to ban for life anyone who is found guilty of racially offensive chanting."

Last Saturday, a man was arrested at Liverpool Street station in London on suspicion of racially abusing a woman following Chelsea's Premier League match at Norwich.
