Leaders Charlton inflicted Sheffield Wednesday’s first defeat of the season at Hillsborough as a Johnnie Jackson free-kick separated the sides to move the Addicks seven points clear of third place.

Sheffield United took full advantage of their city rivals’ slip with a comprehensive 3-0 win on the road at Bury.

Huddersfield needed a late goal by striker Alan Lee to seal a 1-0 victory against Oldham and move up to third.

The MK Dons’ match with Carlisle at Stadium:MK was postponed due to an icy pitch.

Manager-less Stevenage continued their tight grip on the final place in the play-off positions with a resounding 5-1 triumph on their travels at Rochdale, having seen manager Graham Westley depart for Preston.

Brentford and Walsall played out a goalless draw at Griffin Park.

Bournemouth continued their rise up the division as Wes Fogden’s late strike saw them register a 2-1 over Notts County on the South Coast, leaving them just four points off the top six.

With Westley watching his new side in action from the stands, Preston beat lowly Wycombe 3-2 at Deepdale, with Paul Parry’s penalty proving to be the difference between the sides.

Colchester and Scunthorpe shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw in Essex as Josh Walker netted on his debut for the Iron.

Exeter and Hartlepool also took a point each in their 0-0 draw at St James Park.

Basement side Chesterfield picked up what could prove to be a crucial point in their 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient as Jimmy Juan’s goal on his debut keeps the Spireites seven points from safety.

On boss Gary Johnson’s return to the club, Andy Williams’ header in injury-time gave Yeovil a huge win as they beat Tranmere 2-1 at Huish Park. The Glovers are now only in the relegation zone on goal difference.
