Only four matches survived the cold snap but four of the top six sides were in action in a busy day at the top.
Cheltenham moved to the top of the league and one point clear of second-placed Crawley as Kaid Mohamed’s late header was enough to salvage a point against lowly Hereford, who had taken the lead through Delroy Facey.
Southend missed the chance to overhaul the Reds, though, as they were beaten 2-0 by play-off hopefuls Rotherham at Roots Hall on Friday night. Goals from debutant Shaun Harrad and ex-Shrimper Alex Revell sealed the points for the Millers.
In the battle of the play-offs, Torquay came out on top, beating Shrewsbury 1-0 at Plainmoor thanks to Taiwo Atieno’s second-half strike. As a result the Gulls went above the visitors and are only outside the automatic promotion places on goal difference following their sixth successive triumph.
Bristol Rovers maintained their revival as they overcame Morecambe 2-1 at the Memorial Stadium. Goals from Lee Brown and veteran forward Scott McGleish were enough to give the Pirates success despite Kevin Ellison’s late strike and ensure new manager Mark McGhee’s third consecutive three points.
