Only one side in the top six were triumphant in a disappointing weekend for those sides leading the way.
Charlton could only manage a 1-1 draw against Oldham at the Valley as Filipe Morais’ late strike rescued a point for Paul Dickov’s Latics.
The game of the day was undoubtedly in the Yorkshire derby at Hillsborough as Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield played out a thrilling 4-4 draw. Despite leading 4-2 at one stage, the Terriers hit back and the hero for them was Jordan Rhodes, who netted all four goals for the visitors.
Sheffield United moved to within a point of their city rivals with an impressive 2-0 victory on the road against Bournemouth thanks to two own goals.
MK Dons slipped up for the first time at Stadium:MK this term as they were beaten 1-0 by manager-less Preston, with Paul Parry’s early header separating the teams.
Brentford remain in sixth despite their 1-1 draw away at 10-man Bury.
Carlisle are just behind them on goal difference after Francois Zoko’s late header rescued a point in their 2-2 draw with lowly Wycombe.
Stevenage continued their fine run and are now without loss in 11 following their 2-1 home success against Tranmere.

At Spotland, both Rochdale and Yeovil failed to get on the score-sheet.
Jack Lester’s goal right at the death gave Chesterfield what could prove to be a crucial point as they drew 1-1 with fellow strugglers Walsall at the B2net Stadium.
