The league leaders maintained their unbeaten start but suffered a disappointing result at home to one of the sides in mid-table.
Charlton’s advantage at the top was cut to three points after they drew 1-1 with Tranmere at the Valley. The Addicks needed a late penalty from Johnnie Jackson to rescue a point against Les Parry’s men.
Sheffield Wednesday moved up to second and continued their 100 per cent record at home with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Chesterfield at Hillsborough. The division’s top scorer, Gary Madine, notched his tenth goal of a fruitful campaign for the Owls.
Huddersfield are behind them after Lee Novak’s late strike earned the Terriers a 2-1 win against Stevenage in Yorkshire to extend their incredible unbeaten run to 37 league encounters.
With Preston having no game this weekend due to international commitments and MK Dons not in action until their trip to Oldham on Monday night, Notts County make up the final play-off spot after their comprehensive 3-0 home triumph over Hartlepool on Sunday. Karl Hawley notched an impressive brace for the hosts.
Brentford grabbed a 2-2 on the road at Carlisle thanks to Toumani Diagouraga’s last minute equaliser. On-loan striker David Clarkson had earlier scored at both ends for the Bees.
Colchester and Yeovil drew by the same score-line in Essex as a Gavin Massey double, his first career goals, stole a point for the visiting Glovers.
Bury beat Exeter 2-0 at Gigg Lane to send the Grecians to the bottom of the table and it was Leyton Orient that overhauled them as they won their second successive match with an impressive 3-2 win against Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.
Elsewhere, Bournemouth and Rochdale drew 1-1 on the South Coast and Wycombe and Walsall also shared the points with the same score-line in Buckinghamshire.
