Only one match survived the weekend cold snap and Southend missed the chance to move to the top of the table.
Despite leading 2-0 with just five minutes to play, Southend surrendered their advantage to draw 2-2 with strugglers Plymouth at Home Park.
Michael Timlin gave the visitors the lead after just one minute and Dave Martin extended it after 34.
Nick Chadwick pulled one back with four minutes to go and Alex McDonald, on loan from Burnley, came on as a sub and scored a debut equaliser with two minites left.
The result leaves the Shrimpers in second and the Pilgrims one point from safety.
