Former Brazil captain Socrates has died in hospital at the age of 57.

He had been in doctor's care for the past three months due to problems caused by excessive drinking and then food poisoning.

The midfielder, who won 60 caps and scored 22 goals for his country, captained Brazil at the 1982 World Cup finals and played again for them four years later.

He hit the headlines in 2004 when he came out of retirement to make a one-off appearance for non-league Garforth Town near Leeds.

Among his clubs were Corinthians, Fiorentina, Flamengo and Santos. He started and ended his career with Botagogo, hanging up his boots initially in 1989.
