Maradona axed

Argentina have sacked coach Diego Maradona after the country's poor showing at the World Cup finals.

The Argies crashed out at the quarter-finals when they were beaten 4-0 by the Germans.

Maradona had hoped to stay on as international boss but he refused an Argentina FA request to change his backroom staff.

The AFA decided not to renew his deal and have put their Under-20 coach Sergio Batista, a former Argentina team-mate of Maradona, in temporary charge.

Temperamental Maradona had publicly warned his country's FA that he would quit rather than accept a four-year deal on the table if any of his backroom team were given the bullet.
