Unfancied Zambia won the Africa Cup of Nations after beating the star-studded Ivory Coast side on penalties.

They won 8-7 after the game and extra time ended goal-less.

Chelsea's Ivorian captain Didier Drogba missed a penalty during the game and then saw his side beaten after a series of spot-kicks.

Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote went first for the Ivory Coast as the two teams matched each other from the spot for their first five named kickers.

They kept matching each other until the score went to 7-7 when Man City's Kolo Toure had a shot save and Rainford Kalaba blasted over for Zambia.

Arsenal striker Gerviho then missed his kick and Stophira Sunzu hit the sudden death winner.

This valiant victory means so much to the Zambian people after a plane crash that wiped out 18 of Zambian football`s finest on April 27,1993. Indeed Zambia had a date with the destiny on Gabonese soil and they duly delivered thus passing with flying colours. The victory ensured that they gave a final fitting tribute to the 18 fallen, gallant footballers & made sure that they didn’t perish in vain. Once again congratulations, makorokoto, amhlope to the Chipolopolo, Copper bullets, entire Zambian nation, King Kalusha Bwalya & Herve Renard.
