They used to call him King Eric – but now Cantona wants to be President of France!

The controversional former Manchester United striker has sent a letter to mayors throughout his home country asking for support.

Old Trafford's legendary hero needs the backing of 500 town officials to stand for his country's top job.

He will know by the end of next month if he can run for office with the election process running in April and May.

Cantona, infamous for his kung-fu kick on a Crystal Palace fan, was also the player credited with helping Sir Alex Ferguson win his first Premier League title.

The forward, now 45, has become an international film star after scoring 82 goals in 185 games for United following a bargain move from Leeds in 1992.

That season United won the first-ever Premier League and Cantona would go on to collect three more titles with the club before leaving in 1997.
