Capello quits
Wednesday, 08/02/2012
England boss Fabio Capello has quit.
The Italian has resigned following a showdown meeting with FA chiefs where he was asked to explain why he went on television to disagree with their decision to axe John Terry as captain.
Capello said Terry, due to face a racial abuse charge after Euro 2012, should not have been stripped of the armband whilst accusations were still pending.
Terry is due to appear in court in July where he will deny the charges.
In a statement the FA said: "The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today resigned as England manager.
"This follows a meeting involving FA chairman David Bernstein, FA general secretary Alex Horne and Fabio Capello at Wembley Stadium.
"The discussions focused on the FA board's decision to remove the England team captaincy from John Terry, and Fabio Capello's response through an Italian broadcast interview.
"In a meeting for over an hour, Fabio's resignation was accepted and he will leave the post of England manager with immediate effect."
FA chiefs are to face the press tomorrow and give further details. They may also announce a caretaker manager whilst the hunt starts for a replacement boss.
Former England star Trevor Brooking and ex Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate might take temporary charge.
The FA have said they are committed to appointing an English manager to lead the Three Lions.
