Davies has the Golden Touch

The surname Davies originates from the Hebrew meaning of ‘beloved’. Often associated with Wales, due to its connections with St David, it is considered a noble name. Well if your name is Davies then you have another reason to celebrate, as your namesakes in the world of football also added credentials to the name this weekend.
The Davies revolution started after only four minutes on Saturday afternoon. Newly promoted Crawley Town travelled to the South coast for their League two tie with Torquay United. A win would push them towards the top of the table and Scott Davies came up with the goods after a thunderous 25 yard volley, shortly after the kick off. It was his first goal for the club and what a strike it was, chipping the ball in the air to tee himself up just outside the area. Davies tally: 1 goal.
Just two minutes later, further North in Derby, Ben Davies started his brilliant day for the Rams with a looping cross that found Kevin Kilbane. This put Derby 1-0 up against struggling Doncaster Rovers and set them on course for their fourth win in a row and a 100% start to the season. But it was to Northampton that we travelled next, for the subsequent Davies moment. Davies tally: 1 goal, 1 assist.
Down in Northampton, the Cobblers were taking on a Cheltenham side that, along with themselves, had lost midweek in the league. After going 0-1 down to the visitors, Arron Davies made no mistake for the equaliser, as he fired in from close range from an Akinfenwa header. Davies tally: 2 goals, 1 assist.
Before the first half was up, there was still time for Scott Davies to pop up again, this time with an assist. His corner found Josh Simpson and helped Crawley to a final 1-3 victory and a place at the top of the table. Davies tally: 2 goals, 2 assists.
The second half had barely started, when a Davies double-header occurred, back at Pride Park. Ben Davies notched his second assist of the game, when he combined with Steve Davies to put Derby County 2-0 up and cruising. If Derby were to win this game, it would be the first time they had won their first four league games since 1905. So when Ben Davies capped an outstanding performance, with a 20 yard curling effort to make it 3-0, he sent the crowd into raptures. Davies tally: 4 goals, 3 assists.
We then moved to Sunday and the Reebok Stadium, for the next piece of Davies magic. Club captain Kevin Davies headed expertly from a Paul Robinson free-kick on 63 minutes. Unfortunately for him, the damage had already been done by Manchester City and Bolton lost this game 2-3. However, if Kevin had known he was part of an exclusive and prolific Davies club, maybe it would have made defeat easier. Final Davies tally: 5 goals, 3 assists.
