Everton face Rodwell battle

Sir Alex Ferguson could step up his long term interest in Jack Rodwell with a January bid.

The Everton star has been watched by Manchester United over a very long period and it is believed only injuries to the player stopped Fergie moving earlier.

But Rodwell, 20, who can play in defence or midfield, is now back in action and has earned two England caps in the past year.

He would provide ideal cover for injured Old Trafford captain Nemanja Vidic and illness victim Darren Fletcher.

Everton last year got Rodwell to agree a contract to 2015 which will mean United having to part with a possible fee of around £30m to get their man.

The Red Devils will have no problem bettering Rodwell's reported £30,000 a week salary at Goodison Park and know that the Toffees would love the cash for team building, even if they are reluctant to part with the player.

Everton are being linked with central defender Yohan Tavares, 23, who plays in Portugal for Beira Mar.
