Fulham disaster
Thursday, 22/10/2009
Brave Fulham were robbed of a famous Europa League victory over Roma by the last kick of the ball at Craven Cottage.
The Cottagers deservedly led through a 24th minute header by Brede Hangeland. They battled bravely as Roma came back in the second-half and lost defender Stephen Kelly to a red card as he gave away a penalty kick. But keeper Mark Schwarzer, who had already pulled off a number of great saves, stopped the spot-kick. Then, in the three minutes added on, a shot from Andreolli hit John Paintsil and went into the net as the game finished 1-1.
There was even further misery for a much-weakened Everton side who went down 5-0 at Benfica, their worst European defeat ever. Celtic were also beaten, 1-0 at home to Hamburg.
