Giggs to manage Wales?

Giggs to manage Wales?

Monday, 06/09/2010

As speculation mounts over the future of Wales manager John Toshack, Manchester United's legendary midfielder Ryan Giggs is being touted as the next manager of the national team.

With Toshack widely expected to resign this week, 36-year-old Giggs appears to be the public's favourite to succeed him.

Toshack is said to feel that he has taken the Dragons as far as he can, frustrated by losing their opening Euro 2012 qualifier to Montenegro on Friday evening.

Giggs, who scored 12 goals in 64 caps for Wales, retired from the national team in 2007 but has already taken his FAW coaching badges.

Though he is still a regular player at Old Trafford, Giggs would certainly be tempted to begin his coaching career with Wales, much like close friend Mark Hughes did.

Other names in the frame are current Under-21 manager Brian Flynn, who many have suggested as a mentor for Giggs while he continues his playing career; Chris Coleman, who left Coventry in May; and Gary Speed, who has only just taken on his first managerial role at Sheffield United.

Another current player in the running, according to the bookies at least, is Robbie Savage – the Derby midfielder listed as a 66/1 outsider with William Hill.

Any appointment will need to be made before next month, as Wales host Bulgaria and travel to Switzerland in October. Defeats in those games would leave their hopes of qualification looking bleak, especially with two games against England to come.

* Wales fans, would Giggsy be the right appointment to regain some passion in the side?
