Quinn quits Sunderland

Monday, 20/02/2012

Former chairman and player Niall Quinn has left Sunderland.

The ex-Republic of Ireland striker wants to spend more time with his family and concentrate on his other business interests.

Quinn, 45, who also played for Arsenal and Manchester City, was a hugely popular leader at the Stadium of Light.

He stepped down as chairman in October last year and was appointed as an international amabassador for the Black Cats.

Quinn engineered the consortium who took over the club six years ago and helped them back into the Premier League.

He said: "I've had the most amazing six years and it gives me a huge sense of pride to see where Sunderland is today.

"Sunderland is in an incredibly fortunate position to have a hugely talented team of people leading the football club right now.

"There is a tremendous amount of energy about the place and the board and the executive management team are a dynamic and committed group, who hold the best interests of the club at the core of all they do"

Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne said: “Niall has overseen a period of huge transition for the football club with his own unique style of leadership.

“He leaves behind a wonderful legacy and one which will stand our club in great stead for the future.”

Dublin-born Quinn, recently linked with a return to Manchester City, is thought to be returning to Ireland
