Sol for Newcastle
Tuesday, 27/07/2010
Former England defender Sol Campbell is expected to be announced as a Newcastle player.
The centre half was released by Arsenal at the end of the last campaign and had a medical on Tyneside today.
Providing he passes that medical he will link up with Toon boss Chris Hughton, who was with him during their days at Tottenham.
Campbell recently married in the north east and has bought a home in Northumberland with his new wife. He was also linked with Newcastle's rivals Sunderland.
Campbell was linked with Newcastle more than a year ago but decided to return to Arsenal following a spell with Portsmouth and an ill-fated one match term with Notts County.
Newcastle had to move for defensive cover following injuries to full back Danny Simpson and Geordie centre half Steven Taylor, who could be out until October with a dislocated shoulder.
*Newcastle legend Peter Beardsley has moved from coaching at the club's academy to managing the club's reserves and working alongside Hughton with the first-team. Fellow Geordie Steve Stone, the former Aston Villa winger, will be Beardo's deputy after working with the former England forward to develop the club's youngsters.
