Terry on racism charge
Wednesday, 21/12/2011
England captain John Terry is to face a charge of using racist language against QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.
The Chelsea defender says he will fight the charge which is being brought by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Terry, 31, is to face a racially aggravated public order offence. The maximum he can be fined is £2,500.
In a statement Chelsea FC said: "John has made it clear he denies the charge and is determined to do all he can to prove his innocence.
"Chelsea FC has always been fully supportive of John in this matter and will continue to be so.
"The club finds all forms of discrimination abhorrent and we are proud of the work we undertake campaigning on this important issue."
Terry is due to appear before West London Magistrates on Feburary 1.
The charge relates to an incident at the QPR v Chelsea game in October. Terry was questioned after a member of the public contacted the police.
The CPS examined TV footage from the game - including film not broadcast - before taking the decision to ask police to bring the charge.
