Michael Carrick is out of Man United's first game of the season.

The England midfielder picked up an ankle injury during their friendly victory in Ireland on Wednesday.

Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson said the injury is not serious but that the Geordie star will be out for a few weeks.

United will also be without Gabriel Obertan, Owen Hargreaves and Rio Ferdinand for Sundays' Community Shield game with Chelsea. Both Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney are expected to play a half each.
