Woodgate fear

Woodgate fear

Monday, 27/09/2010

There are fears that the career of England defender Jonathan Woodgate could be over.

And Spurs are already preparing for life without the talented centre-half by moving for South Africa's central-defender Bongani Khumalo.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has admitted that a fee of £1.5m has been agreed for Khumalo who is expected to arrive at White Hart Lane in the January transfer window.

The Swiss-born 23-year-old plays for Supersport United and has 19 South Africa caps. He scored for his country at World Cup 2010 as they beat France.

Meanwhile Woodgate, who has already had a number of operations on his latest groin problem, is believed to be heading for one last piece of surgery that could decide his future. If he undergoes the knife again, Woody is facing another possible 12 months out of the game.

Woodgate, 30, who began his career with Leeds before moves to Newcastle, Real Madrid, Middlesbrough and then Tottenham, is one of the best central defenders England has produced for years but has been dogged by injuries for many years. He has been out of action since November last year.

Tottenham also have continual worries over lynchpin central defender Ledley King who is unable to train properly as his knee swells up after every game. He has been warned that if he continues to play through the pain barrier he could end up crippled.
