Woodgate out
Thursday, 02/09/2010
Premier League clubs confirmed their 25-man squads last night, the new ruling coming into play without much drama – Tottenham's Jonathan Woodgate the only notable victim.
Despite much talk of potential high-profile absentees, Woodgate was the sole name to catch the eye, and his omission was widely expected.
Owen Hargreaves, another tipped to be culled, was part of Manchester United's squad, along with every other senior pro in their ranks; while Man City had plenty of room for the likes of Roque Santa Cruz and Shay Given, who had been linked with Eastlands departures.
Chelsea named the smallest squad, selecting just 19 players, but that number can be topped up by an unlimited quota of under 21 players. Across the league, players like Theo Walcott and Mario Balotelli would constitute such youth players.
Former England Under-21 forward Luke Moore was left out of West Brom's squad, prompting speculation over his future, while Wolves' injury-hit winger Michael Kightly may be loaned out to regain fitness after being excluded from their selection.
Ben Alnwick was left out of Tottenham's squad, after the loan arrival of Croatia stopper Stipe Pletikosa pushed the 23-year-old down to fourth-choice at White Hart Lane.
