Premier League

by Daniel Tyler

EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR, Tottenham Hotspur

It was another weekend for of goals, excitement and controversy in the Premier League.

Wayne Rooney proved the difference in the handshake clash at Old Trafford, while the players of Wigan, Blackburn and West Brom put in impressive performances to gain vital victories.

But I’m going to have to go for Emmanuel Adebayor who was sensational as title contenders Spurs thrashed Newcastle 5-0.

The Togo international has not been on form of late, having not scored in his previous eight league games.

But the former Arsenal man showed what talent he possesses by setting up four and scoring the other in this emphatic win.

The Londoners performance was a perfect end to an eventful week for Spurs manager Harry Redknapp who now faces the tough choice of staying with his exciting team or leaving to take the England hot-seat.

Championship

PAUL GALLAGHER, Leicester City

Leicester City entered the weekend knowing they would have to end their inconsistent form if they are to have any chance of reaching the play-offs.

However things weren’t going to be easy for them as fourth place Cardiff City visited the King Power stadium.

But Nigel Pearson’s men showed the form that earned them the title of pre season favourites as they powered their way to a 2-1 win.

Paul Gallagher was the Foxes hero, scoring both of the goals in a performance full of energy and quality.

The 27-year-old showed composure form the spot before striking a delightful free-kick to move the Blues up to 12th and in sight of the play-off places.

Leagues 1 & 2

League One

DAVID NOBLE, Exeter City

On paper struggling Exeter seemed to have their work cut out against high flying Sheffield Wednesday.

But Paul Tisdale’s side once again showed the unpredictability of football as The Grecians came from behind to record an important 2-1 win.

The winning strike came courtesy of midfielder David Noble and you would have your work cut out to find a better free-kick this season.

The 30-year-old whipped the ball off the underside of the bar and in from 25 yards to secure their first league victory in five games.

More importantly the Devonshire outfit have moved five points clear of the drop zone.

League Two

MARK ELLIS, Torquay United

Torquay United defeated fellow promotion contenders Shrewsbury 1-0 to record their seventh straight league win.

In a tightly contested contest defender Mark Ellis popped up with the decisive goal on 68 minutes to keep up Martin Ling’s side’s incredible run of form.

It was a scrappy goal by the 23-year-old whose faint touch diverted in a Taiwo Atieno header.

The Gulls are now up to fourth where they sit level on points with Southend who occupy the final automatic promotion place.
