Premier League
by Daniel Tyler
TIM KRUL, Newcastle United
Newcastle have made a terrific start to the season, suffering just one defeat in their opening 13 league games.
They displayed their team spirit once again by holding Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
Yes, they didn’t deserve a penalty and United dominated the closing stages but the back four, and especially keeper Tim Krul, showed off the Geordies new found steel.
The 23-year-old saved well from Giggs and Evra but most notably Nemanja Vidic when the skipper looked set to snatch United all three points.
The Dutch international has been in superb form all season, as the Magpies currently sit in fourth position.
Championship
ALBERT ADOMAH, Bristol City
For the second successive week the Championship player of the week goes to a Bristol City, but this time it’s not Nicky Maynard.
No, it’s his strike partner Albert Adomah whose performance helped the Robins turn over table toppers Southampton.
The 23-year-old scored the first and set up the second in a display full of and energy.
The ex-Barnet man took his tally to five for the season as the Robins extended their unbeaten run to five games.
City are still in the relegation places, but level on points with Milwall who are perched just outside the drop zone on goal difference.
Leagues 1 & 2
League One
REDA JOHNSON, Sheffield Wednesday
With Charlton facing Huddersfield Monday, Sheffield Wednesday entered the match with Leyton Orient knowing three points would take them into the top two and add pressure on Monday’s clash.
It wasn’t Wednesday’s best performance of the season, but they managed to secure a 1-0 win at Hillsborough.
The victory didn’t only take them into the automatic promotion places, but extended their unbeaten home record.
The all-iimportant goal was scored by the unlikely Reda Johnson who was in the right place to meet Chris Line’s cross.
The defender also managed to help Gary Megson’s side keep a clean sheet in a good weekend for the Owl’s.
League Two
NICK CHADWICK, Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth looked in dire straits ahead of the visit of fellow strugglers Northampton on Saturday.
As well as being rooted to the bottom of the Football League and on a seven game losing streak, the Mariners were knocked out of the FA Cup by non-league Stourbridge in midweek.
However a 17 minute goal bonanza saw the Green Army’s fortunes changes as they ran out emphatic 4-1 winners.
It was a great team performance from Carl Fletcher’s men, but one man that really impressed was debutant Nick Chadwick.
The striker returned to Home Park after a three-year absence, when he made the move from Stockport County on Thursday.
The 29-year-old wasted no time re-introducing himself, scoring a powerful header and putting in a typical workman like performance.
The much-needed three points takes the Devon outfit to within three points of safety.
