Premier League

by Daniel Tyler

MICHEL VORM, Swansea City

Swansea stretched their unbeaten league run to three games after holding Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield.

The Swans more than held their own against their glamorous opponents, but the plaudits still have to go to their impressive Dutch keeper Michel Vorm.

After a number of fantastic stops to deny Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez the summer capture saved the best till last by turning over a dipping Glen Johnson volley to secure a well deserved point for the Welsh side.

It was only Brendan Rodgers men’s second point away from the Liberty Stadium, but with the 28-year-old between the sticks there will be more to come.

Championship

BILLY SHARP, Doncaster Rovers

This week the recognition just simply had to go to Doncaster’s Billy Sharp.

The 25-year-old tragically lost his two-day-old son last week, but showed incredible courage by playing against Middlesbrough just 48 hours later.

Amazingly the striker opened the scoring in that match before revealing a t-shirt which read: “That's for you son", in an emotional evening at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Just four days later and Sharp once again netted against Ipswich in a 3-1 win for Donny, with the Ipswich fans giving him a standing ovation.

The bravery, determination and mental strength in the man is unbelievable and it is a week that highlights how unimportant football is compared with situations of this nature.

Leagues 1 & 2

LEAGUE ONE

JOHNNIE JACKSON, Charlton Athletic

Charlton romped to another victory on Saturday with a 5-2 win over Preston at The Valley.

The victory takes them five points clear at the top of League One, with just one defeat all season.

Although the team put in a magnificent performance the stand out man was skipper Johnnie Jackson.

The former Spurs youngster grabbed two goals and showed great composure in a technically assured performance.

The 29-year-old has seven league goals this season, which has played a big part in the Addicks magnificent start to the season.

LEAGUE TWO

JOE KUFFOUR, Gillingham

Gillingham brought to a halt their two-game losing run with a dramatic 4-3 win over Northampton at the Preistfield Stadium.

The Gills hero was striker Joe Kuffour who notched a fantastic first half hat-trick.

The 29-year-old is on-loan from fellow League Two side Bristol Rovers and he showed why the Kent outfit are so keen on his signature.

He showed great finishing ability for the first, skill with a back-heel for the second and composure from the spot for his third.

The former Arsenal youngster now has five goals in four appearances for Andy Hessenthaler’s play-off chasing side.
